Comprehensive Pedestrian Plan, City of Kinston, NC

Funded by a 2006 Pedestrian Planning Grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation.

Rivers developed a comprehensive pedestrian transportation plan to improve pedestrian programs, policy and infrastructure throughout the City based upon the NCDOT's 10 section template for development of a municipal bicycle or pedestrian plan. The plan will be used to guide local efforts to improve conditions for pedestrians and ultimately improve the experience of visitors and the quality of life for residents. While the project objective was the preparation of a city-wide, comprehensive pedestrian transportation plan, specific initiatives were addressed including downtown traffic calming, a riverfront greenway, pedestrian connectivity on main vehicle corridors, and a crosswalk improvement program. Throughout the course of this project, Rivers facilitated task force meetings and two public workshops, in addition to the development of an online survey and project website.
