West Fifth Street Gateway & Streetscape
City of Greenville, NC
NCAPA MARVIN COLLINS AWARD
SPECIAL THEME AWARD CATEGORY – COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
The West Fifth Street Gateway/Streetscape project was one of the first components of the City’s Streetscape Master Plan to be implemented in efforts to implement the Center City – West Greenville Revitalization Plan. Rivers was selected to design the initial two phases of the project, including guiding a public input process to achieve community support for detailed design plans. The design creates a “gateway” into the historic West Greenville Community, and develops a streetscape theme incorporating consolidation of overhead utilities onto aesthetically attractive “period” utility poles, decorative pedestrian lighting and street signage, decorative sidewalks, bus shelters, functional civic art commemorating the history of the West Greenville community, pedestrian plazas and neighborhood markers. The second phase also includes reconstruction of a signalized intersection along the corridor as a roundabout to resolve the problem of severely misaligned intersecting streets. This will be the City’s first roundabout within the center city. Phase one construction has been completed while phase two waits construction funding.
