In June, 2007, Pitt County was selected as a Fit Community: a program to recognize and reward municipality and county efforts to promote physical activity, healthy eating and tobacco-free programs, policies, environments and lifestyles. Dozens of applications were received from across North Carolina, and municipalities' efforts were judged based upon objective criteria collected from peer-reviewed studies and national programs.� The County has demonstrated leadership in creating healthy eating environments through its commitment to the Winner’s Circle healthy eating program and by passing a new tobacco-free schools policy in 2006.
